Marianas Trench

*****NEWS Oct 3rd, 2006

My cousin Matt's band, Marianas Trench, is releasing their first CD across Canada. It rocks! And in the cover of the CD on the 2nd or 3rd page they have a picture of a DNA sequence trace file... how cool is that. A must have for all genomicists. :)

It has been a while since I sat down to write something here (to my Mom and my wife, major subscribers to this webpage). As for news, I have been out post-doc hunting earlier this year - I interviewed with some amazing labs and people, (which isn't an understatement or said just to be nice) it is tragic that you can only be physically in one place at one time. But "post-doc" you say, you aren't even a doc! Well the lack in website activity can only be attributed to that fact that I wrote up my thesis this summer! And, finally, it is almost here, on Sept. 22nd I have my defense at UBC! (In the spirit of open source, I am hoping you will eventually find a PDF of my thesis on this page). More news, over the past few months, I was awarded a NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship and a UK-Canada Millenium Award (contingent on graduating). Seems like I am moving to the UK with the last two awards. More on that soon. I also co-funded my first couple of grants with Steven Jones (he was the primary applicant) to support sending a Canadian contingent to RegCreative in Belgium, Nov 2006. I encourage anyone interested in text-mining, gene regulation and biological annotation to consider attending.

Apologies! Sometimes the Chinook/ORC web interface goes down and I don't notice - could be that the person who wrote it was drinking too many margaritas on the patio while putting together the code. If it is down and you want to try it out, send me an email at smontgom+bcgsc.ca (change + to @).

My cousin Matt is in a band called Marianas Trench here in Vancouver. I checked out their songs on their website last night and they sound rockin! They will also be on tour opening for Theory of a Deadman sometime in Mar/Apr in Western Canada. Click here to go to their website
